Importers new to Indonesian coffee often ask how much they need to buy, and how long it takes. This guide covers the basics of buying Gayo coffee by the container.
How much fits in a 20ft container
A 20ft container usually carries about 19–21 tonnes of green coffee. A common load is 320 jute bags of 60 kg (19.2 tonnes), often with GrainPro or similar liners inside the bags to protect moisture and aroma.
Minimum order
- Full container (FCL): the most cost-effective option per kilogram
- Less than container (LCL): possible for smaller volumes, with higher freight cost per kilogram
- Samples: 200–300 g per lot for cupping before any contract
HUN can supply around 10 tonnes of Gayo green coffee per month, depending on the season. A full container is therefore usually prepared over several weeks.
Lead time
- Sample approval: about 1–2 weeks including courier time
- Contract and payment terms: price, grade, moisture, and Incoterms (usually FOB)
- Preparation: sorting, bagging, and export documents, usually several weeks
- Shipment: Gayo coffee normally ships through Belawan port in Medan; ocean transit depends on destination
What affects the price
- The ICE arabica market and the agreed differential
- Process and grade (fully washed grade 1, wet hulled, natural, wine)
- Volume and payment terms
