EUDR and Gayo Coffee: Traceability Guide for EU Buyers

Bagikan:

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requires companies placing coffee on the EU market to prove that it was not grown on land deforested after 31 December 2020. For buyers of Indonesian green coffee, this turns traceability from a nice extra into a condition of sale.

Timeline

The EU has postponed the application date twice. Under the latest amendment, the rules apply from the end of December 2026 for large and medium operators, with a later date for micro and small operators. Check the current EU guidance before you sign contracts, as details can still change.

What EU importers need

  • Geolocation of every plot where the coffee was grown (GPS points for small plots, polygons for larger ones)
  • Proof of legality: the coffee was produced in line with local laws, including land rights
  • A due diligence statement submitted to the EU information system before import
  • Records that link each shipment to its plots

Indonesia and Gayo

Gayo coffee comes mainly from smallholder farms in Central Aceh and Bener Meriah, often less than two hectares each. Traceability therefore depends on how well the exporter maps farms and keeps lots separate from collection to warehouse.

Questions to ask your Gayo supplier

  1. Can you provide plot coordinates or polygons for this lot?
  2. How do you keep lots separate during processing and storage?
  3. Which documents prove land legality for the farms?
  4. Can the lot be traced back to a defined group of farmers?

How HUN works

Highland Urban Nusantara sources from its own estate and from partner farms in the Gayo highlands, which makes lot-level traceability practical. Ask us which traceability data is available for a given lot before you order samples. See our export page and the guide to importing green coffee from Indonesia.
